The theology of giving in the Episcopal Church is rooted in a rich tradition of gratitude, stewardship, and participation in God’s mission. Giving—whether financial, time, or talents—is not simply a duty, but a spiritual practice that reflects a person’s relationship with God and community.
Stewardship
Stewardship is how we use our time, our talents, and our treasure to carry on Christ’s work of reconciliation in the world. Here is a way to look at these aspects of stewardship.
“All things come of thee, O Lord, and of thine own have we given thee.”
— Offertory sentence from the Book of Common Prayer (BCP)
Time
The gift of time.
How much time do we set aside for God? Yourself? How often do you pray? Meditate? How much time do you set aside to serve the church? Make the most of your time by following in the way of Jesus; serve, pray, act and volunteer.
Talent
Sharing our talents
We are all blessed with a variety of gifts from God—-Have you discovered them?
Your profession, your trade, all requires gifts perhaps you have an artistic ability, or good organizational skills that could help the church. Maybe you have a beautiful voice and could sing and become a part of the choir. There are lots of opportunities here at St. Stephen’s to express talents and explore new ones. Be thoughtful and creative! God is calling you to share your gifts.
Treasure
The gift of income
Remember, our theology is one of hospitality and stewardship because we believe God owns everything. We are stewards of God’s astounding creation. We give of our income to the church to sustain God’s mission. Remember where your treasure is there your heart will be also.
